Also known as Cephallonia, it's the largest of the Ionian Islands. Made famous in the 1990s by the novel Captain Corelli's Mandolin, Kefalonia is a relaxed family-oriented holiday island where Venetian fortresses meet quiet fishing villages.

Boasts the extensive Mount Ainos National Park, replete with osprey, golden eagles, and other wildlife. Of particular interest to walkers and birdwatchers, archaeology buffs won't be disappointed either.

Food: Plenty of international cuisine and local classic Greek dishes at reasonable prices.

Nightlife: Argostoli has a good choice of bars, bouzouki clubs and discos, but Kefalonia's nightlife is generally laid back and centered around restaurants and good company.

Shopping: Jewellery, arts and crafts and leather are good buys in Argostoli, the island's capital. Also look out for the local cheeses and thyme honey.

Days out: In addition to the rugged beauty of the national park, other notable sites around Kefalonia include: Venetian fortress at Assos; Drogarati Caves and underground lake at Mellisani; picturesque village of Fiscardo at the northern tip of the island.
